PhD thesis: Optical and opto-thermal manipulation of nanoparticles in complex light fields

  Research interest:
  Applications of complex/structured light

My PhD focuses on the use of complex light fields to manipulate nanoparticles. Put simply, I want to use structured patterns of light to manipulate objects not much bigger than atoms in new and exciting ways. Among others, this work would benefit biologists by facilitating a greater degree of control over biomolecules.

Who or what inspired you to pursue your research interests?

I was inspired to pursue the science of light by the early pioneers of quantum mechanics and the seminal laser work done by Maiman and Townes. Being able to play with lasers whilst developing novel applications that ultimately benefit humanity was (and still is) very alluring to me.
