This research examines the territorial dimensions of the green transition, focusing on how decarbonisation policies shape regional development trajectories, innovation, and political dynamics across Europe. It investigates which regions are most vulnerable to structural shifts brought about by climate action, explores the drivers of green innovation in less-developed areas, and analyses the relationship between regional vulnerability and rising anti-green sentiments. The project combines spatial analysis and econometric methods to develop a multidimensional vulnerability index, map regional green innovation patterns, and assess the socio-economic impacts of place-based climate policies. By integrating insights from economic geography, environmental policy, and political economy, the research aims to advance theoretical understanding of the green transition’s uneven impacts while generating practical guidance for policymakers to design just transition strategies that are spatially targeted, equitable, and politically sustainable. Overall, it seeks to ensure that no region is left behind in the move towards climate neutrality.

Who or what inspired you to pursue your research interests?

My research interests were inspired by working with international organisations such as the European Commission and the World Bank, where I saw firsthand the challenges policymakers face in designing climate policies that are both effective and equitable. Discussions with policymakers revealed a clear gap in understanding how the green transition affects different regions and how these impacts can fuel political discontent if left unaddressed. This motivated me to pursue research that bridges environmental policy and regional development, aiming to generate practical insights that help design just transition strategies ensuring that no region is left behind in the move towards climate neutrality.
