While the Standard Model of Particle Physics is a highly predictive and well established model describing the fundamental particles and forces which make up the world around us, there are still many questions left unanswered and observed phenomena which remain unexplained (such as the presence of dark matter, the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry and the unification of all four fundamental forces). My research will be using data from the ATLAS experiment of the LHC at CERN to search for electroweak supersymmetry, which is an extension to the Standard Model that proposes new supersymmetric partners for each of the existing particles. If found, supersymmetry has the potential to answer many of the open questions regarding the Standard Model, and my work aims to contribute to this search.
Who or what inspired you to pursue your research interests?
The many unanswered questions within the field of High Energy Physics and gaps which remain in the Standard Model is a concept which I find especially interesting. I gained experience working within this area through both an internship and my final year project, which deepened my interest in contributing to such research. The opportunity to play a part in advancing this understanding excites me and I look forward to being able to contribute to the searches for further answers regarding the behaviour of the Universe.
